PM Drew: Visionary Renewable Energy Projects In The Pipelines

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Miniser Dr. Terrance Drew has announced significant progress in the Federation’s renewable energy strategy, including plans for a 50-megawatt solar farm and geothermal drilling. Speaking at The Roundtable media briefing this week, Dr. Drew highlighted these initiatives as key components of the government’s vision to transform the nation into a Sustainable Island State.

The solar farm, developed in partnership with the Republic of China (Taiwan), will begin construction later this year. This agreement follows the dissolution of a previous contract with a private partner that failed to meet critical obligations for a Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Project. The prime minister assured the public that the new collaboration reflects the government’s commitment to delivering renewable energy solutions that meet national standards and timelines.

Advancing Geothermal Development

In addition to solar energy, Dr. Drew shared promising updates on geothermal energy development. “We have sourced the funding for the drilling of geothermal, so based on where we are right now, geothermal drilling of those initial wells is on track,” he stated.

These renewable energy projects are pivotal for reducing the Federation’s reliance on fossil fuels and aligning with global sustainability goals. Dr. Drew underscored their importance in driving economic growth, explaining that affordable energy is critical to attracting energy-intensive industries such as manufacturing, technology, and tourism.

“Even in the tourism industry, cruise ships are asking for onshore power,” Dr. Drew noted. “The country that can provide onshore power sooner will have the advantage in tourism, so energy will have direct and indirect benefits for our country.”

Impact on Households and Industry

The government’s renewable energy strategy also includes plans to integrate solar panels into its housing projects. This initiative is expected to reduce electricity costs for residents while alleviating pressure on the national grid.

Additionally, a feed-in tariff is being developed to ensure households and companies that generate renewable energy can sell surplus electricity to the national grid at a guaranteed rate. This policy aims to incentivise renewable energy production, fostering a culture of sustainability within the Federation.

A Vision for a Sustainable Future

These projects mark a significant step forward in the government’s efforts to establish St. Kitts and Nevis as a leader in renewable energy within the region. Dr. Drew’s administration views energy reform as central to the Federation’s transition to a Sustainable Island State, enhancing both economic opportunities and environmental stewardship.

“We have to drive down the cost of energy to attract additional industry,” Dr. Drew said. “This is why we are pushing so heavily on the solar plant and geothermal.”

With the solar farm and geothermal projects set to launch in 2025, the Federation is poised to make substantial gains in energy independence, sustainability, and economic resilience. These initiatives not only address current energy challenges but also lay the groundwork for a brighter and more sustainable future for St. Kitts and Nevis.
