Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has renewed his call for the trial involving the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis and its former Chief Executive Officer, Lenworth Harris, to be televised. Emphasising his administration’s dedication to transparency, Dr. Drew has beenn calling for public access to the legal proceedings which are set to begin on 25th January, 2025.
Highlighting the significance of the case, Prime Minister Drew clarified that the lawsuit was initiated by Harris himself, not the government. He underscored the importance of accountability and transparency in the matter.
“The people of St. Kitts and Nevis deserve full clarity on the events surrounding the Development Bank. I have asked the Attorney General to request permission for cameras in the courtroom to allow the public to witness the facts directly,” Dr. Drew stated.
The prime minister’s request stems from his belief that public access to the proceedings will strengthen trust in the judicial process. He noted that when justice is both done and seen to be done, it enhances public confidence in governance and institutions.
Commitment to Transparency and Reform
Dr. Drew highlighted the broader implications of the case, framing it as an opportunity to reflect on the government’s ongoing efforts to reform public institutions. His administration, he said, is committed to strengthening oversight and addressing systemic issues within key organisations like the Development Bank.
“This is about ensuring our institutions operate responsibly and in the best interest of the people,” he explained.
Dr. Drew contrasted his administration’s approach with the lack of transparency under previous leadership. He criticised past practices that he said eroded public trust and pledged to restore confidence through a culture of good governance.
“We are determined to prevent a repeat of past missteps. This government prioritises accountability, transparency, and the safeguarding of public resources,” Dr. Drew said.
If approved, the decision to televise the trial would mark the first time courtroom proceedings are broadcasted in the Federation, setting a regional precedent for judicial transparency.
Prime Minister Drew concluded by urging citizens to remain engaged and informed, as the government continues to champion transparency and justice in public affairs.
