St. Kitts and Nevis Hails Posthumous Pardon of Marcus Garvey as a Triumph of Justice

Earlier today, the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis expressed profound gratitude to outgoing United States President Joe Biden for granting a posthumous pardon to The Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey. According to a statement issued by the government, this monumental decision addresses a historical injustice and honours the enduring contributions of a global icon who championed Pan-Africanism and the empowerment of people of African descent.

Marcus Garvey, a pivotal figure in the Pan-African movement, has a significant connection to St. Kitts and Nevis. During a visit to Basseterre in November 1937, Garvey delivered a powerful speech at the Mutual Improvement Society Hall, now a historic site on Lower Market Street. In his address, he urged citizens to embrace self-reliance and a vision for progress, stating, Your country can be no greater than yourselves. It is not God that makes the cities and towns. God gives you the land, but you build the cities. Your St. Kitts [and Nevis] will be no greater than your mindset.” These words resonate deeply with the nation’s ongoing commitment to development and empowerment.

Acknowledging Marcus Garvey’s Global Legacy

Garvey’s revolutionary ideas and unwavering advocacy for justice have left an indelible mark on the Caribbean and beyond. His leadership in the global Pan-African movement laid the foundation for the empowerment of black communities worldwide and continues to inspire generations to embrace unity, self-determination, and progress.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance M. Drew greeted news of the pardon as a significant milestone, stating:
“This pardon is a momentous acknowledgment of Marcus Garvey’s lifelong dedication to justice and equality. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of addressing historical wrongs and honouring those whose contributions have shaped our collective identity.”

Celebrating with Jamaica and Garvey’s Family

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis extended warm congratulations to Jamaica, Garvey’s birthplace and the origin of his revolutionary ideas. Sharing in their pride, the nation joins Jamaica in celebrating this global recognition of their national hero.

Special recognition was also given to the family of Marcus Garvey for their unwavering efforts in preserving his legacy and advocating for this historic moment.

“As the nation celebrates this landmark decision, St. Kitts and Nevis reaffirms its dedication to the principles Marcus Garvey stood for: self-reliance, education, empowerment, and progress. His teachings remain a guiding force as the country strives to create a brighter, more equitable future for all.
