During a visit to Basseterre in November 1937, Garvey delivered a powerful speech at the Mutual Improvement Society Hall, now a historic site on Lower Market Street. In his address, he urged citizens to embrace self-reliance and a vision for progress, stating, “Your country can be no greater than yourselves. It is not God that makes the cities and towns. God gives you the land, but you build the cities. Your St. Kitts [and Nevis] will be no greater than your mindset.” These words resonate deeply with the nation’s ongoing commitment to development and empowerment.
