The Ministry of Health has issued a public alert regarding an outbreak of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) affecting the early childhood sector. In response, the Ministries of Health and Education have partnered to ensure thorough cleaning and sanitisation of impacted schools and facilities to curb the spread of the illness.
HFMD is a highly contagious viral illness primarily affecting infants and young children. The Ministry urges parents, guardians, and childcare providers to remain vigilant for symptoms, which may include:
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Painful mouth sores
- Rash on hands, feet, and buttocks
- Loss of appetite
- Irritability, especially in younger children
Hygiene as the First Line of Defence
To limit the spread of HFMD, the Ministry stresses the importance of maintaining strict hygiene practices. Recommendations include:
- Frequent Handwashing: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after changing nappies and before meals.
- Avoiding Close Contact: Refrain from hugging, kissing, or sharing eating utensils with infected individuals.
- Regular Disinfection: Clean high-touch surfaces, such as doorknobs, countertops, and electronic devices, with bleach-based products.
Parents are strongly encouraged to keep children displaying symptoms of HFMD at home and seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
Collaborative Efforts to Ensure Safety
The Ministry of Health is working closely with daycare administrators and the Ministry of Education to enhance infection prevention measures. Comprehensive cleaning and sanitisation of affected facilities are underway, with the aim of strengthening infection control before the centres reopen.
In a statement, the Ministry emphasised: “The health and safety of our communities are paramount. Together, with proactive hygiene measures and public cooperation, we can mitigate the spread of HFMD and safeguard the wellbeing of our children.”
Citizens and residents are urged to report suspected cases of HFMD to local health authorities promptly. By staying vigilant and prioritising hygiene, communities can contribute to the containment of this outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.
