The Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) has issued a public alert regarding a recent surge in ATM skimming activities across the island, with multiple incidents reported between December 30, 2024, and January 16, 2025.
According to KPSM, investigations have revealed that scammers are placing skimming devices on ATM machines, particularly in the Simpson Bay area, to capture users’ banking information and PIN codes for fraudulent transactions.
“The devices are designed to capture card details and PIN codes, enabling fraudulent transactions and theft of funds,” KPSM stated in their advisory.
The police force has outlined several preventive measures for ATM users. “Before inserting your card, check the ATM for unusual or loose attachments, especially near the card slot or keypad,” the advisory warns. “If anything appears suspicious, avoid using the machine and report it to the bank immediately.”
Additional safety recommendations include covering the keypad while entering PINs, regularly monitoring bank statements for unauthorized transactions, and preferring ATMs located inside banks or well-lit, high-traffic areas.
“KPSM is actively investigating these incidents and working closely with local banks to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for these scams,” the statement noted, adding that increased patrols around ATM locations will be implemented.
