The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) is poised to expand on the progress achieved in 2024, which saw significant reductions in crime, strengthened community partnerships, and the successful hosting of international events without major incidents.
In a media appearance on 22nd January 2025, Commissioner of Police James Sutton, supported by Deputy Commissioner Cromwell Henry and Assistant Commissioner Travis Rogers, outlined the year’s achievements. Deputy Commissioner Henry highlighted an 11 percent reduction in reported crimes compared to 2023.
Key statistics revealed declines across several major crime categories:
- Homicides: Down 10 percent, from 31 in 2023 to 28 in 2024.
- Firearm-related offences: Dropped 39 percent, from 31 to 19.
- Malicious damage: Reduced by 30 percent.
- Bodily harm/woundings: Fell 11 percent, from 161 to 144.
- Larcenies: Decreased by 12 percent.
- Break-ins: Reduced by 1 percent.
- Drug possession: Declined by 5 percent.
There were, however, slight increases in sexual offences (up 6 percent, from 68 to 72) and robberies (up 8 percent, from 39 to 42).
A standout achievement was the resolution of 16 out of 28 homicides, representing a 57 percent clearance rate. “Detection helps prevention,” noted Deputy Commissioner Henry. “If individuals know there’s a high likelihood of being caught, they are less inclined to commit crimes.”
Commissioner Sutton commended the government for equipping the RSCNPF with vital tools, training, and resources, and he acknowledged the support of local, regional, and international law enforcement agencies, alongside the community.
Looking ahead to 2025, Commissioner Sutton assured the public of continued efforts to strengthen citizen security. “The public can expect the police to be more forceful in enforcing our laws because it is important to send that strong message,” he said. “We have to be firm but professional, ensuring respect for all individuals while upholding the law.”
The RSCNPF also plans to increase its presence and utilise advanced technological tools to enhance safety and security measures further.
