Authorities in St. Kitts and Nevis are investigating the tragic discovery of 19 decomposed bodies aboard a drifting vessel southwest of Nevis. Among the deceased, a woman and a child have been identified, raising further concerns about the origins and circumstances of the incident.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) Coast Guard was alerted to the presence of the vessel on Thursday, 29th January 2025, receiving reports between 11:00am and 12:00pm. Responding swiftly, officers located the unmarked boat and towed it to the Coast Guard base in St. Kitts for further examination.
Upon inspection, law enforcement discovered the bodies in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating that the vessel had likely been drifting for a prolonged period. Preliminary investigations confirm that all individuals were deceased before the boat entered St. Kitts and Nevis territorial waters.
Further complicating the investigation, the vessel bore no identifying markings. However, identification documents retrieved on board suggest that some of the deceased may have originated from Mali, West Africa. The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) is working to verify identities and establish the events leading up to the tragedy.
Initially, reports indicated 12 bodies, which later increased to 13, before authorities confirmed the final count of 19 victims. Crime scene investigators have since processed the vessel, collecting evidence to aid in the ongoing inquiry.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact law enforcement as they seek to unravel the circumstances behind the vessel’s grim discovery.
