Acting Police Commissioner Junior Benjamin thanked suspended Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher, saying she has been a mentor and guide for him.

Speaking at a media briefing at police headquarter in Port of Spain earlier today, Benjamin could not divulge any additional information on the matter, which involves the alleged unlawful importation of two sniper rifles for the Strategic Services Agency (SSA), but added that the investigation remains under the purview of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Intelligence and Investigations, Suzette Martin.

The development comes after Harewood-Christopher’s arrest in connection with the alleged unlawful procurement of firearms, and her subsequent release, due to insufficient evidence.

The Police Service Commission has directed Harewood-Christopher to cease to report for duty, and has written to President Christine Kangaloo, asking that DCP Benjamin be appointed acting police commissioner

Harewood-Christopher’s attorney Pamela Elder SC issued a pre-action protocol letter calling for Harewood-Christopher to be reinstated.

The matter remains under investigation.
