PM Drew Joins Regional Leaders for Landmark CARICOM Summit

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, has joined fellow Caribbean leaders in Bridgetown, Barbados, for the Forty-Eighth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The high-level summit, held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, commenced with a strong call for regional unity, bold leadership, and urgent action on key challenges affecting Caribbean nations.

Under the theme “Strength in Unity: Forging Caribbean Resilience, Inclusive Growth, and Sustainable Development,” the meeting is set to address pressing issues such as climate action, economic resilience, food security, and crime.

Global and Regional Leaders Call for Action

Outgoing CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, reflected on the region’s resilience following the devastation of Hurricane Beryl in 2024, emphasising the importance of solidarity and collective action.

International leaders also reaffirmed CARICOM’s global influence. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen recognised the Caribbean’s crucial role in shaping climate policy and economic sustainability, pledging continued international support.

Barbados’ PM Mottley Outlines Bold CARICOM Vision

The incoming CARICOM Chair, Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, delivered a powerful keynote address, declaring that the summit “cannot be business as usual.” She outlined critical priorities for CARICOM, including:

  • Freedom of movement within the region
  • Addressing the rising cost of living
  • Enhancing education systems
  • Strengthening regional security

She also called for independent funding mechanisms for CARICOM institutions and urged leaders to commit to a long-term development plan for Haiti that ensures access to education, healthcare, and human rights.

PM Drew to Engage in Critical Discussions

With discussions underway, Prime Minister Drew is expected to play an active role in shaping national and regional policies that align with St. Kitts and Nevis’ priorities. As CARICOM leaders tackle climate justice, fairer global trade policies, and economic growth, the decisions made during this summit will shape the region’s future.

The two-day meeting is set to conclude with key agreements and strategic initiatives aimed at reinforcing CARICOM’s leadership on the global stage.
