Government Quarry to Boost Output by 300% After Major Equipment Upgrade

The Government Quarry is set to increase production by over 300% following the acquisition and commissioning of three key pieces of equipment. The announcement was made by Konris Maynard, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities, Domestic Transport, Information, Communication and Technology, and Posts, during a formal ceremony on Tuesday.

Minister Maynard highlighted the impact of the power screen secondary crushing plant, the power screen screening plant, and the RokBak truck, noting that the upgrade will significantly support the nation’s construction sector.

“It is with great pride that today we celebrate a significant milestone for the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis with the commissioning of a newly upgraded government quarry. We have now commissioned three other critical pieces of equipment—the secondary crusher and the screening plant. Additionally, the RokBak truck that you see on my right. With these new additions, the quarry’s output is set to increase by over 300 percent,” Minister Maynard stated.

He emphasised that the expanded production capacity will help meet infrastructure demands, prevent delays, and reduce construction costs.

“The impact of this upgrade cannot be overstated. The quarry produces aggregates such as stone dust, half-inch stones, and three-quarter-inch stones, which are essential for the production of concrete and masonry blocks. While many materials used in construction, including steel, cement, PVC pipe, and electrical wires, are imported, 50% of the material input for concrete consists of aggregates. With this upgrade, we can now produce these materials locally at higher quality and in greater quantities than ever before,” Maynard explained.

Permanent Secretary Daryll Lloyd also commended the government’s investment, stating: “We are grateful that the government saw the need to procure additional equipment sufficient to match the anticipated market demands for aggregates for construction projects in 2025.”

This significant upgrade follows the commissioning of a new primary crusher in August 2024. The investment is expected to play a crucial role in advancing St. Kitts and Nevis’ construction industry by improving efficiency and reducing reliance on imported materials.
