PM Drew Urges Diplomatic Dialogue Between U.S., CARICOM, and Cuba

Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, has issued a strong call for diplomatic dialogue between the United States, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and Cuba. His appeal comes in response to recent U.S. threats of visa restrictions on foreign government officials and their immediate families over allegations that Cuba’s labour export programmes, particularly its medical missions, involve exploitative practices.

In a national address on Friday, 14th March, Prime Minister Drew reaffirmed St. Kitts and Nevis’ adherence to international labour laws and standards while emphasising that bypassing dialogue in favour of punitive measures could pose a significant threat to regional health and security. He called for constructive engagement, highlighting the longstanding partnerships between St. Kitts and Nevis, Cuba, and the United States.

Prime Minister Drew underscored the friendly relations the Federation maintains with both Cuba and the U.S., stressing that diplomacy must prevail over isolation and confrontation.

“As an independent nation, St. Kitts and Nevis has long been committed to peace and multilateralism. Cuba has been an indispensable partner to the Caribbean, and we believe its full integration into hemispheric development initiatives benefits all,” Dr. Drew stated.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the United States’ role as a valued development partner, reaffirming the Federation’s commitment to strengthening ties with Washington. He expressed gratitude for the educational and professional opportunities afforded by both nations, sharing his personal experience of receiving a medical education in Cuba and further specialisation studies in the U.S.

“Our history proves that these two nations, despite their differences, can coexist in a way that benefits the people of this region,” he pointed out.

While addressing concerns about Cuba’s medical personnel working in the Federation, Prime Minister Drew categorically rejected any claims of labour exploitation. He outlined the benefits and conditions provided to Cuban healthcare professionals, including fair wages, comfortable government-provided housing, vacation leave, and working hours equivalent to local professionals.

“Let there be no doubt, Cuban professionals in St. Kitts and Nevis are treated with dignity, fairness, and respect. Any accusations of exploitative labour practices in our Federation are inconsistent with our laws and values,” Prime Minister Drew stated.

He also emphasised that, as a nation with a history of enduring forced labour and human trafficking, St. Kitts and Nevis remains steadfast in opposing such practices anywhere in the world.

Prime Minister Drew warned that escalating tensions between Cuba and the United States could have severe repercussions for the Caribbean, particularly in healthcare and economic stability. He urged leaders of the three entities to engage in open dialogue and mutual respect to address shared challenges.

“It is time for dialogue. The vision between Cuba and the United States does not serve the interests of our region. It does not help our people, our economies, or our shared vision for a more stable and prosperous region,” Dr. Drew underscored.

St. Kitts and Nevis, he emphasised, will continue to pursue policies that align with the best interests of its people while upholding principles of justice, regional solidarity, and national sovereignty.

“Under my leadership, St. Kitts and Nevis will continue to engage both Cuba and the United States of America. We remain committed to constructive diplomacy and fostering relationships that uplift our people and advance stability in the region,” the Prime Minister noted.

The U.S. visa restrictions form part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, which he launched at the start of his second term in office.
