St. Kitts and Nevis Strengthens Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan, Eyes Renewable Energy Collaboration

The Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis have reaffirmed their strong diplomatic partnership, with a focus on expanding cooperation in renewable energy and sustainable development. During a high-level meeting on Tuesday, President of Taiwan, Lai Ching-te, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Economic Development and Investment, Rt Hon. Dr Denzil L. Douglas, engaged in strategic discussions aimed at deepening bilateral relations.

Minister Douglas reiterated St. Kitts and Nevis’ unwavering support for Taiwan’s inclusion in international organisations.

“Taiwan has the innovation, technology, knowledge, and expertise to make a tremendous positive impact on some of the world’s most urgent issues,” stated Minister Douglas. “We will continue to advocate for Taiwan’s rightful place among the global community.”

President Lai Ching-te expressed gratitude for St. Kitts and Nevis’ steadfast advocacy on Taiwan’s behalf, particularly in securing Taiwan’s participation in key global organisations such as the United Nations General Assembly, the World Health Organization, and the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Advancing Renewable Energy Collaboration

As part of St/ Kitts and Nevis’ Sustainable Island State Agenda, the discussions placed special emphasis on leveraging Taiwan’s expertise in renewable energy.

“I believe that by sharing Taiwan’s experiences in renewable energy and energy-saving technologies, our two countries will jointly drive green industrial transformation and stimulate sustainable development together,” President Lai affirmed.

The visit underscores the importance of energy resilience, economic growth, and climate change mitigation as shared priorities between the two nations.

Trade, Investment, and Knowledge Exchange

Minister Douglas is leading a high-level delegation to Taiwan to bolster diplomatic relations and explore new opportunities for trade, investment, and knowledge transfer, particularly in the renewable energy sector. As part of the official visit, the delegation participated in the 2025 St Kitts and Nevis Trade & Investment Promotion Seminar, held meetings with students, and engaged in site visits to key energy infrastructure, including the Taiwan Power Company.

The delegation includes Kaye Bass, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Adina Richards, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Development; Sean Lawrence, Director in the Ministry of International Trade; Jonathan Kelly, Energy Transition Manager at the St Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC); and Trevor Blake, President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry & Commerce.

The strengthened engagement between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan signals a mutual commitment to diplomatic cooperation, sustainable energy innovation, and economic development, setting the stage for deeper collaboration in the years ahead
