Saint Kitts and Nevis and Nigeria Forge Groundbreaking African-Caribbean Trade Partnership

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, has announced the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nigeria-based Green Economic Zone (GEZ) Special Economic Zone Management Company. This agreement paves the way for the development of a state-of-the-art Agro-Hub Warehouse and Logistics Centre in Saint Kitts and Nevis, strengthening economic and trade ties between Africa and the Caribbean.

Speaking during the 2nd April, 2025, edition of The Roundtable, Dr. Drew highlighted that Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed full support for the initiative. In a demonstration of this commitment, a Nigerian delegation will attend the upcoming Investment Gateway Summit in Saint Kitts and Nevis in May 2025 to further advance discussions on the project.

A key objective of this partnership is the establishment of the African-Caribbean Atlantic Cooperation (ACAC), an initiative designed to facilitate the direct movement of goods between the West Coast of Africa and the Caribbean. This trade corridor will focus on increasing exports of agricultural products from Saint Kitts and Nevis, creating significant economic opportunities for local producers.

“Our discussion is that we don’t want things to come one direction,” said Prime Minister Drew. “So there will be meetings between the minister [of agriculture] and the producers here in Saint Kitts and Nevis to get our products ready, because we intend to send [our products] to the west of Africa.”

Dr. Drew is urging local producers to scale up production and ensure their goods meet international standards to take full advantage of the economic prospects this initiative presents. He underscored the transformative potential of the venture, noting that even a small share of the African market could yield significant benefits for the nation’s industries.

“If Saint Kitts and Nevis were to just cater to 0.05 percent of that, that is much more than our own population here, and almost any industry here will survive as a result. This is a very, very great potential for our people and for our producers here,” Dr. Drew added.

This historic collaboration marks a bold step forward for Saint Kitts and Nevis, as it positions itself at the forefront of Caribbean-African trade relations. Through the African-Caribbean Atlantic Cooperation, the Federation is fostering long-term economic growth, cultural exchange, and mutual prosperity, setting a precedent for stronger ties between the two regions.
