In the wake of the Federation’s first homicide for the year, the Citizen Security Secretariat has issued a strong statement condemning the act of violence and reaffirming its unwavering commitment to fostering safe and resilient communities across St. Kitts and Nevis.
The Secretariat expressed deep sorrow following the death of 60-year-old Dialysis Nurse, Isalin Pitt of New Road, who was fatally attacked in the early hours of Saturday, 5th April. Nurse Pitt’s untimely death ended what had been a historic five-month period without a single recorded homicide in the Federation—a milestone not seen in over two decades.
In its official statement, the Secretariat extended heartfelt condolences to Ms. Pitt’s family and loved ones, describing the incident as a tragedy that has affected the entire nation. “We mourn not only the loss of a dedicated healthcare worker but also the peace we have all worked tirelessly to build,” the statement read.
The Citizen Security Secretariat emphasised that while the incident is deeply regrettable, it should not discourage the continued collective effort to reduce crime and violence. “We will not surrender our communities to criminal elements or violent activities that compromise the safety and security of our people,” it declared. “Every citizen and resident is entitled to live free from fear.”
The Secretariat praised the gains made through the government’s ongoing, community-centred crime prevention strategy, highlighting the success of the “all-of-society” approach which has enjoyed bipartisan support and broad community engagement.
“We have already proven that major successes can be achieved when we work together—across political, generational, and social lines. Let us not lose sight of that progress now,” the Secretariat stated.
In urging continued public vigilance, the Secretariat called on residents to strengthen partnerships with the police by reporting suspicious activity and actively participating in community safety efforts. “Be your brother’s keeper. If you see something, say something—speaking up could be the very action that protects someone else from harm.”
The Secretariat also reminded the public of the support services available, including trauma counselling, community resilience training, and neighbourhood safety programmes. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to empower communities to take ownership of their security and ensure long-term social stability.
“Together, we will continue to reclaim our neighbourhoods, protect our families, and create the kind of society where lasting peace is the rule—not the exception,” the Secretariat concluded.
