The Jet Set nightclub roof collapse in Santo Domingo on 8th April has triggered an outpouring of sorrow across the Caribbean, with Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, extending his deepest sympathies to the people and Government of the Dominican Republic.
At least 225 lives were lost in what has become one of the most devastating events in the country’s recent history. In a letter addressed to President Luis Abinader, Prime Minister Drew conveyed a message of comfort and regional unity, expressing that St. Kitts and Nevis shares in the grief of the Dominican people.
“We are shaken by the scale of this loss,” Dr. Drew wrote. “In this time of anguish, we send strength, compassion, and unwavering support from our shores to yours.”
The deadly incident claimed the lives of several prominent Dominicans, including at least two former Major League Baseball players – Octavio Dotel, who won the World Series while pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011 and Tony Blanco, a former player for the Washington Nationals. Famous merengue singer, Rubby Pérez, was also crushed to death in the ceiling collapse.
189 people have so far been reported injured.
Emphasising the bonds that unite Caribbean nations, Prime Minister Drew described the tragedy as a reminder of the deep human ties that transcend borders. “We are more than neighbours—we are a Caribbean family. And in this moment of sorrow, we mourn with you.”
He further extended prayers for healing and resilience to the victims’ families, communities, and all those affected by the catastrophe, reaffirming his government’s solidarity in this period of national mourning.
The Jet Set nightclub incident has stirred widespread regional concern, with leaders and citizens alike reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of unity in times of crisis. Prime Minister Drew’s message underscores a commitment to standing with sister nations through both celebration and sorrow.
