Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, has taken legal action following an alleged defamatory publication issued by Annette Frank, marking a strong and decisive response to what the Office of the Prime Minister describes as false and malicious allegations.
In a statement released on 10th April, 2025, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Dr. Drew views the matter with utmost seriousness and has instructed his attorneys to act accordingly.
The claims, published by Frank on 7th March, 2025, have been described as “scandalous, totally false and defamatory,” with the Prime Minister asserting that they were issued “with clear malice in order to cause reputational damage.”
Protecting Reputation and Demanding Accountability
The letter, dated 7th April, 2025 and issued by the Prime Minister’s legal representatives, demands that Frank:
- Immediately and unequivocally retract the publication from all media platforms, including social media,
- Issue a public apology to Prime Minister Drew,
- Pay EC$500,000.00 in compensation for the damage and distress caused,
- Cover EC$50,000.00 in legal costs, and
- Provide a written undertaking not to repeat or republish any such defamatory claims.
The letter also sets a strict ten-day deadline for a response, stating: “In the absence of a speedy and constructive response to this letter within the time specified, the Hon. Prime Minister will have no choice but to issue proceedings for defamation.”
Balancing Free Speech and Responsibility
While reaffirming his government’s commitment to freedom of expression and press freedom, Prime Minister Drew underscored that such rights come with responsibility. “The right to speak freely must never be confused with the licence to spread falsehoods,” a representative from the Prime Minister’s Office stated. “Dr. Drew will defend his integrity against any attempt to erode public trust through misinformation or personal attacks.”
This legal action signals a firm stance against the spread of defamatory content and serves as a warning that reputational attacks will not go unchallenged—particularly when motivated by malice.
Dr. Drew signalled that he was set to take legal action against two individuals for defamatory statements made against him during this month’s edition of The Roundtable. It is not yet known who the second entity is or when legal action against them will be pursued.
