PM Drew Champions Small Island States at World Bank Spring Meetings

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Drew, is representing the Federation at the 2025 World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., advocating for the unique needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) amid global economic discussions. The World Bank Spring Meetings St. Kitts and Nevis delegation includes Financial Secretary Hilary Hazel and other Caribbean leaders focused on economic resilience and private sector investment.

Dr. Drew participated in the Caribbean Ministerial Meeting hosted by Anna Bjerde, Managing Director for Operations at the World Bank. Key themes included climate vulnerability, sustainable development, and regional unity in addressing global economic challenges.

In an exclusive statement, Prime Minister Drew highlighted the importance of participating in international platforms. “It is important to attend these meetings because decisions made at these meetings impact us, whether we are here or not,” said Dr. Drew. “St. Kitts and Nevis has to be at the table so that its presence can be known and its voice heard. If we are not here, there are decisions that are being made that would affect us, and we would not have had an impact on the outcome.”

Dr. Drew also urged the World Bank and similar institutions to recognise the limitations of using GDP per capita as a primary measure of a nation’s development status.

“We are being judged on our GDP per capita, but I think that is a misrepresentation. Our economy is small. We are very vulnerable,” he said.

He called for increased inclusion of countries like St. Kitts and Nevis, emphasising the compounded challenges posed by small market size, limited natural resources, and exposure to climate change.

Underscoring the strength of a unified regional voice, Dr. Drew noted, “Uniting our voices gives us greater opportunity for success for what we seek to achieve at this level. If we continue to work together, we will see more success for each of us on the issues that affect us — climate change, building resilience, creating jobs, investment in the private sector, [and] transformation of our economies.”

The 2025 Spring Meetings are particularly significant for Caribbean nations, which continue to advocate for fairer financial access, sustainable recovery efforts, and meaningful investment opportunities. The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis remains steadfast in promoting regional solidarity and global engagement through its Sustainable Island State Agenda, ensuring the Federation remains an active voice in shaping development policy.
