In celebration of International Nurses Day 2025 on 12th May, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance M. Drew, announced the reintroduction of the Associate Degree in Nursing at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), underscoring his administration’s commitment to expanding healthcare education and workforce development.
The move forms a critical part of the Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda, which prioritises healthcare and human capital as central pillars of national advancement. “I am proud to announce today the reintroduction of the Associate Degree in Nursing at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. This programme, designed to complement the existing Bachelor of Science in Nursing, is part of a deliberate and strategic effort to create multiple pathways for entry into the nursing profession,” stated Prime Minister Drew.
He linked the decision to this year’s International Nurses Day theme—Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies—stressing that investment in nursing is not only necessary, but foundational to building a resilient economy and society. “Investing in nurses is not charity, it is foresight. It is nation-building,” he declared.
Alongside this educational initiative, Prime Minister Drew highlighted a new national research effort spearheaded by the Office of the Principal Nursing Officer. The project, titled A Descriptive Analysis of the National Nurses Workforce in St. Kitts and Nevis, aims to provide the government with reliable data to guide future health policies and resource allocation. “This study will ensure that our policies are informed, our decisions are data-driven, and our investments are aligned with both our health and economic goals,” Dr. Drew added.
In his address, the Prime Minister extended his appreciation to student nurses and nurse educators at CFBC and called on the nation’s youth, especially young men, to consider a future in nursing. “To all young people in our Federation, I say this: consider nursing. It is a profession where your mind will be challenged, your heart will be fulfilled, and your spirit will grow. To the young men, especially, the nation calls on you. Nursing is not defined by gender, but by courage, character, and compassion.”
The reintroduction of the Nursing Associate Degree at CFBC marks a decisive step towards building a stronger, more sustainable healthcare system in St. Kitts and Nevis—one rooted in access to education, strategic investment, and inclusive opportunities for national service.
