Nevis STEM Week 2025 Launches with Focus on Innovation, Partnerships and Career Growth

STEM Week 2025 in Nevis officially opened on 19th May with strong emphasis on innovation, practical skills, and partnerships that bridge the gap between the classroom and real-world careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Organised by the Department of Education–Nevis, the annual observance promotes critical thinking, creative innovation, and increased awareness of STEM-related career paths among students. Education Officer for STEM, John Williams, underscored that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to establish a sustainable and high-quality STEM education model aligned with the National Education Sector Plan.

“STEM Week was initiated to keep the agenda for STEM alive, give schools a platform to showcase their progress, and inspire our students to explore opportunities in these fields,” Williams said during the media launch.

The Department has developed key partnerships to reinforce its efforts. Notably, the Medical University of the Americas has collaborated with the department to facilitate a Medical School Immersion Programme, providing student cohorts with hands-on exposure to medical training and introducing them to non-traditional careers in healthcare.

In addition, a collaboration with the University of Zurich, supported by C.A.R.E. SKN, introduces students to space science and global research perspectives.

Williams stressed the importance of continued support from other partners to ensure students can practically apply their knowledge. “It is critical that we move forward to a place where our students can not only pass a paper and pencil test, but apply their learning in practical ways,” he said.

Now in its third year, STEM Week 2025 follows the theme ‘Collaborate, Evaluate, Create and Solve’, chosen to highlight the core skills needed in every STEM discipline.

The week features the following activities:

  • Math Infusion Day on Tuesday, 20th May, integrates mathematics into various subject areas across all schools.
  • A Science Symposium also takes place on Tuesday, 20th May at 9:00am at the Nevis Performing Arts Centre, under the theme ‘Innovating Nevis, Pioneering Science for Career Development and Sustainable Growth’.
  • Digital Literacy Day will be observed on Wednesday, 21st May through school-wide activities promoting digital skills and awareness.
  • The STEM Challenge, to be held on Thursday, 22nd May at 9:00am at the Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park amphitheatre, will bring student teams together to tackle real-world challenges.
  • The week concludes with the STEM Expo on Friday, 23rd May at the Visitor’s Centre, Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park, where students will display projects developed over the past year.

STEM Week 2025 continues to serve as a platform for innovation and exploration, opening doors to careers and learning beyond traditional subject boundaries.
