Industrial Site Daycare Centre Renamed to Honour Vanta Walters’ Legacy

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has paid a powerful and heartfelt tribute to one of the nation’s most distinguished educators by renaming the Industrial Site Daycare Centre to the Vanta E. Walters Daycare Centre, in honour of her transformative contribution to early childhood education across the Federation. The announcement, made by Minister of Education, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley on Thursday, 22nd May, 2025, celebrates a legacy of care, innovation, and service spanning over four decades.

Speaking at the renaming ceremony, Dr. Hanley described the moment as a defining day in the Federation’s educational journey.

“Today is a truly special day of education in our Federation as we gather to pay tribute to and honour Vanta E. Walters for her selfless dedication to the children and families of this Federation by renaming the Industrial Site Daycare Centre. The strong systems she developed will continue to guide us forward, ensuring that every child can learn, grow, and succeed,” he stated. “It is with profound gratitude and immense pride that I now formally declare this facility the Vanta E. Walters Daycare Centre.”

Director of the Early Childhood Development Unit (ECDU), Kimona Browne, delivered a moving tribute, calling Walters “The Mother of Early Childhood.” She highlighted the depth and significance of Walters’ contributions to shaping the early childhood sector in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Mrs. Vanta Ellerdene Walters is not merely an educator. She is a visionary whose imprint on our nation’s educational landscape will be felt for generations to come,” said Browne. “Her story is one of unwavering dedication, remarkable innovation, and extraordinary leadership that spans an illustrious 40-year career.”

Walters, who served as the guiding force behind the creation of the Industrial Site Daycare Centre—officially opened in 1991—expressed deep appreciation for the honour.

“To have my name mounted on a building, it is understandable that it would indeed be difficult not to feel a sense of pride and remain humble,” she said. “I am a firm believer that a person should be given their flowers while they are still alive. I am standing here today very much alive and can understand and appreciate what is taking place here in my honour. I am enjoying the fragrance of my flowers.”

The Vanta E. Walters Daycare Centre remains the largest early childhood institution in the Federation, and now stands as a living tribute to Walters’ unparalleled leadership in early childhood development. The renaming reflects the Labour administration’s ongoing commitment to recognising and honouring the contributions of nationals who have helped build a stronger, more compassionate society.

The ceremony was not just a renaming—it was a celebration of a national treasure whose work continues to inspire educators, families, and policymakers alike. As the government forges ahead in building a sustainable and inclusive education system, the legacy of Vanta E. Walters serves as both foundation and guiding light.
