Better Opportunity Fairs Launch with Strong Community Support in Basseterre

The Citizen Security Secretariat has extended sincere appreciation to vendors, sponsors, and community participants following the successful staging of the first Better Opportunity Fair, held on 30th May on Central Street, Basseterre. The event marked the beginning of a four-part national initiative aimed at addressing crime and violence through access, empowerment, and opportunity.

The fair, which drew enthusiastic participation from the public, featured a wide range of community-based vendors and service providers offering health screenings, educational resources, employment pathways, and youth development support. Organisers noted that the event created an atmosphere of inclusion and upliftment, in line with the Secretariat’s broader mission of fostering safer and more resilient communities.

“Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who helped make this first event such a success,” said Eartha Carey, Coordinator of the Citizen Security Secretariat. “The engagement we saw from the vendors and the public alike confirms that when we bring services directly to the people, we unlock real possibilities for personal, academic, professional, and economic growth.”

The Secretariat praised vendors for their commitment and the tangible value they brought to the fair through on-the-spot services, advice, and interactive engagement. Sponsors were also acknowledged for their critical financial and logistical support, which ensured that the event delivered on its promise of empowerment and accessibility.

“This isn’t just a fair — it’s a national call to action,” Carey added. “One that supports a multi-sectoral approach to reducing crime and violence by making people feel seen, heard, and supported.”

Carey’s remarks echoed the position of Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, who chairs the Citizen Security Task Force.

“Our approach to citizen security is not just about enforcement, but empowerment. The Better Opportunity Fair is a reflection of our belief that safer communities are built through access to opportunity, investment in people, and the unwavering commitment to leave no one behind,” said Dr. Drew following the successful event.

The Better Opportunity Fair series is part of the Labour-led government’s national strategy to strengthen community ties, expand access to resources, and provide alternatives to at-risk populations. Three more fairs are scheduled to take place across St. Kitts and Nevis, with the final event set for August 2025.

As the series continues, Carey noted that the Secretariat looks forward to further collaboration with its partners and greater public participation, reinforcing the belief that sustainable citizen security begins with collective action and community trust.
