St. Kitts and Nevis Championing Small Island Voices at 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference

St. Kitts and Nevis is making waves on the international stage as the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) unfolds in Nice, France. Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment, Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke, is at the helm of the Federation’s delegation, amplifying the urgent concerns of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the global dialogue on ocean governance and climate mobility.

A major highlight of the Minister’s mission came on 8th June, when she attended a Champion Leaders Luncheon hosted by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility. The session gathered top officials from climate-vulnerable nations—including Fiji and Tuvalu—alongside global stakeholders to confront some of the most pressing issues affecting coastal and island communities. These include rising sea levels, forced migration, and limited access to sustainable blue economy funding.

Minister Clarke used the opportunity to underscore the importance of sustained international engagement. “These are not just meetings,” she noted. “They are platforms where our lived experiences shape policy. For countries like ours, climate change is not a debate—it’s a matter of survival.”

She also brought the solidarity and message of Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew who remains unwavering in his commitment to climate leadership and global engagement. His administration continues to pursue policies under the Sustainable Island State Agenda, aimed at building resilience and securing international partnerships for long-term sustainability.

With negotiations intensifying, Minister Clarke’s participation is helping to position St. Kitts and Nevis as a credible and influential voice on ocean protection and climate equity. She is scheduled to take part in a series of bilateral meetings and technical sessions on climate financing, blue economy collaboration, and mechanisms to better support island nations at the frontlines of climate impacts.

As the conference continues, St. Kitts and Nevis remains focused on securing meaningful outcomes for its citizens—calling for bold action, stronger financial commitments, and a more inclusive global response to the environmental crises affecting vulnerable nations.
