Indian authorities have recovered the black box from the wreckage of the Air India flight that crashed in Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all 241 people on board and several on the ground. The aircraft, a London-bound Boeing 787, plunged into a residential area shortly after takeoff, striking a medical college hostel and erupting into flames.
Officials from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau confirmed that the digital flight data recorder—commonly referred to as the black box—was found on a rooftop near the crash site. Recovery of the device is expected to expedite the investigation into one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent years.
“The black box recovery marks a vital step forward in the investigation,” said Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu via social media. He added that the bureau had begun its work “with full force.”
According to Professor Paul Fromme of the U.K.-based Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the data recorder holds critical information about engine performance, control systems, and cockpit voice recordings.
“This should show quickly if there was a loss of engine power or lift after takeoff and allow a preliminary determination of the likely cause for the crash,” said Professor Fromme, who heads the organisation’s Aerospace Division.
In the wake of the disaster, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered Air India to conduct enhanced maintenance checks on its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliner fleet. The directive includes inspections of fuel parameters, cabin air compressors, hydraulic systems, engine control systems, and a detailed review of takeoff parameters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hails from Gujarat—the state where the crash occurred—visited the lone surviving passenger on Friday. Meanwhile, recovery teams continued combing through the crash site for remains, with DNA testing underway to identify victims who were burned beyond recognition.
The crash, which occurred just minutes after takeoff, devastated a densely populated area of Ahmedabad. The aircraft collided with a medical college hostel, killing several students and igniting a massive blaze.
Authorities have called it one of the worst aviation tragedies in Indian history. As families grieve and the nation mourns, investigators are racing against time to determine what led to the fatal descent.
