Construction Begins on New Basseterre High School, Delivering on Labour’s Promise to Modernise Education

Construction of the new Basseterre High School (BHS) has officially commenced, fulfilling a key promise by the Labour government to revolutionise education infrastructure in St. Kitts and Nevis. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, who applauded the efforts of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, and the broader Labour administration, for bringing the long-anticipated project to fruition.

This morning, Prime Minister Drew described the start of the project as a defining moment for the Federation.

“This is more than just the construction of a building; it is a promise fulfilled—a promise to our young people and their families to provide them with the best educational opportunities in a world-class environment,” said Dr. Drew. “We’re turning vision into reality, and we remain on schedule to deliver.”

The Labour administration’s determination to rebuild the historic school follows years of advocacy after the closure of the old facility due to safety concerns. Minister Hanley acknowledged the emotional and educational disruptions caused by the closure but noted that this government is now writing a new chapter.

“The closure of the old BHS campus remains regrettable,” said Dr. Hanley. “However, we are now ready to turn the page and begin a new chapter for education in St. Kitts and Nevis. This state-of-the-art facility is a bold step forward.”

The new Basseterre High School will feature 32 modern classrooms designed to support 21st-century learning. It will include specialised spaces for science, technology, and the arts—such as four science labs, six computer labs, and two music rooms. A fully equipped lecture hall, a 1,200-seat auditorium, and international-standard sports facilities are also part of the blueprint.

The facility has been thoughtfully designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring an inclusive environment for all students, including those with disabilities.

“This is not just an investment in buildings, but in people,” said Minister Hanley. “The school’s reconstruction will create vital job opportunities for local contractors, tradespeople, and workers, stimulating economic activity while delivering educational transformation.”

The launch of the BHS project is part of a wider initiative under the Drew-led administration to transform educational infrastructure throughout the Federation. Schools across the Federation have been receiving upgrades aimed at creating safe, modern, and technology-enabled environments for learning.

“Our vision extends beyond this one school,” Dr. Drew noted. “We are laying the groundwork for a brighter future, where education empowers our youth to become leaders, innovators, and critical thinkers who will shape the destiny of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The start of construction at Basseterre High School stands as a symbol of promise turned into progress, anchoring the government’s broader educational reform agenda and its commitment to delivering tangible benefits to the people.
