Ministry of Health Appoints Emergency Room Consultant to Strengthen Emergency Care Services

In a major step toward modernising emergency care in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Ministry of Health has announced the appointment of Dr. Jason Ifill as the Federation’s first Emergency Room Consultant. The move is part of a broader effort to improve the quality, speed, and efficiency of emergency medical services at the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

Dr. Ifill arrived at the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport on Monday, 16th June, and began official duties the following day. He was welcomed by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Curtis Martin, and Medical Chief of Staff, Dr. Daveen Wilkin, in a gesture marking the significance of this healthcare milestone.

Until now, the emergency room at JNF General Hospital had been managed by competent general practitioners, but lacked specialist oversight. Dr. Ifill’s appointment is the first of its kind and is expected to lead to transformative improvements in emergency healthcare delivery across the Federation.

Speaking to local media on Tuesday, Dr. Jenson Morton, Director of Health Institutions within the Ministry, explained that Dr. Ifill will not only provide direct clinical expertise, but will also play a strategic leadership role.

“Dr. Ifill will oversee case reviews, staff supervision, and the implementation of critical system upgrades,” said Dr. Morton. “His presence also enables the continuous professional development of our emergency room team, including training and certification in basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).”

Dr. Ifill will also guide the introduction of new management protocols, regular audits, and quality control initiatives to strengthen emergency response outcomes and patient care standards.

The Ministry of Health’s decision aligns with the government’s broader commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and building capacity in high-impact areas. It also reflects an ongoing focus on evidence-based, patient-centred care, as the nation works toward achieving its sustainable development and public health goals.
