Saint Kitts and Nevis today joined sister nations across the region in celebrating the 44th Anniversary of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) under the theme “Adapting, Innovating, Sustaining: A Unified OECS for a Changing World.”
In a statement marking the occasion, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew hailed the milestone as a symbol of “purposeful collaboration, shared progress, and unwavering commitment to regional integration.” He encouraged citizens and residents to participate in OECS Colours Day by wearing the organisation’s colours — green, yellow, white, and navy blue — as a visible demonstration of unity and pride across the Eastern Caribbean.
“The OECS stands as a shining example of what small island states can achieve when they act in solidarity,” Dr. Drew said. “From free movement and economic harmonisation to education, healthcare, and climate resilience — our collective efforts have empowered us to stand stronger in a rapidly changing world.”
The Prime Minister emphasised that Saint Kitts and Nevis remains firmly committed to the OECS vision, and praised the enduring significance of the Revised Treaty of Basseterre, signed in the Federation’s capital in 2010, which serves as the legal and institutional backbone of the OECS Economic Union.
As global and regional challenges continue to evolve, Dr. Drew urged renewed dedication to integration and innovation across the region. “We recognise that we live in a changing world, and we must remain united in order to survive and thrive in this hostile global environment,” he stated.
He also commended the work of the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit (RIDU), a division within the Office of the Prime Minister, for its leadership in ensuring that the ideals of OECS integration are translated into practical action through public engagement, policy coordination, and regional collaboration.
“Let us use this anniversary not only to reflect on how far we’ve come,” Dr. Drew added, “but also to recommit ourselves to building a stronger, more resilient, and more united OECS that can boldly confront the challenges of our time.”
The OECS was established on 18th June, 1981, with the signing of the original Treaty of Basseterre. Over the past four decades, it has evolved into one of the most integrated and cooperative regional blocs in the developing world, representing a collective commitment to unity, stability, and sustainable development.
