UWI Five Islands Campus Expands to St. Kitts and Nevis in Landmark Educational Partnership

In a major boost to tertiary education access and regional integration, the Ministry of Education has announced the formal expansion of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. The announcement was marked by a ceremonial signing and dialogue at the Office of the Minister of Education, signalling the beginning of a new era in academic collaboration between the Federation and one of the region’s most respected institutions.

UWI officials joined Minister of Education, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, and members of the local education leadership to commemorate the milestone. Representatives from the UWI Five Islands Campus in Antigua were also present, underscoring the institution’s commitment to deeper engagement with Eastern Caribbean states.

The expansion aligns with UWI’s strategic mission to increase accessibility to high-quality education and generate research tailored to the unique challenges of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

“This move brings St. Kitts and Nevis more fully into the UWI universe,” said Professor Justin Robinson, Principal of the UWI Five Islands Campus. “We are focused on building solutions-driven research for Eastern Caribbean governments. Our goal is to expand not only access to education, but also access to OECS-relevant knowledge and capacity.”

Minister Hanley welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, pledging full support from the Ministry of Education to guide students toward opportunities at UWI. “It is my honour as Minister of Education to endorse this important step forward,” said Dr. Hanley. “We are committed to engaging more of our young people and increasing their enrolment at the Five Islands Campus. You will certainly see more of our students pursuing higher education through this partnership.”

The collaboration is expected to create new pathways for academic advancement in critical fields such as climate resilience, public health, digital technology, and governance, in alignment with the Federation’s sustainable development goals.

As Caribbean nations continue to prioritise education as a driver of economic resilience and social progress, the integration of St. Kitts and Nevis into the UWI Five Islands framework is being heralded as a transformative development for both local and regional advancement.
