The National Cost-of-Living Task Force has launched a new public awareness campaign—Smart Spend SKN—to help citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis better navigate rising expenses through informed purchasing. The initiative debuted on 18th June, 2025, with the release of a comparative infographic showing that families could save up to EC$525 per year simply by switching to a lower-cost brand of corn flakes cereal.

The infographic illustrates a straightforward but impactful cost-saving measure: opting for an alternative brand of corn flakes allows shoppers to save an average of EC$10.35 per box. For households that purchase cereal weekly, this amounts to over EC$500 in annual savings—enough to cover up to 1.5 months of electricity, several school uniforms, or even three months’ worth of fresh local produce.
“Our tagline, ‘Same bowl. Smarter Spend,’ reflects a vital economic strategy,” said Dr. Marcus Natta, Chair of the National Cost-of-Living Task Force. “When families save $10 on cereal, that’s $10 available, possibly towards bus fare, lunch, medicine, books or savings. These conscious choices build crucial resilience against global price shocks.”
The campaign promotes evidence-based consumer choices by highlighting that less expensive alternatives can match the quality of leading brands while significantly reducing grocery bills. By equipping the public with this knowledge, Smart Spend SKN aligns directly with the Task Force’s mission to reduce everyday costs and increase household financial resilience.
The National Cost-of-Living Task Force was established by a 2023 Cabinet directive and comprises experts across economics, agriculture, and social services. Its strategic efforts span six priority areas: Food Security, Energy Affordability, Housing, Transportation, Consumer Goods, and Local Production Resilience. The overarching goal is to foster a society where every citizen can thrive, not just survive.
The Smart Spend SKN campaign is expected to roll out additional infographics, public service announcements, and community outreach activities in the coming weeks.
