Israel and Iran exchanged strikes for a seventh consecutive day on Friday, as former President Donald Trump weighed direct U.S. military involvement and fresh diplomatic efforts moved ahead. The conflict, now one week old, has seen both sides target key military and nuclear facilities, intensifying regional tensions.
Trump told reporters he is considering an attack on Iran’s heavily fortified Fordo uranium enrichment site, located deep beneath a mountain and typically beyond reach. He indicated a decision on U.S. involvement would come within two weeks, citing a “substantial chance” of renewed talks over Tehran’s nuclear activities.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi appeared en route to Geneva for discussions with the EU’s top diplomat and counterparts from the UK, France and Germany. Flight-tracking data showed his aircraft departing Van, Turkey, near the Iranian border—though Iran customarily confirms such movements only hours later.
In Washington, Britain’s Foreign Secretary revealed he had met at the White House with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and envoy Steve Witkoff to explore a diplomatic path forward. Yet Araghchi reiterated on state television that Iran would not negotiate while Israeli strikes continued. “As long as this aggression and invasion continue, there is absolutely no room for talk or diplomacy,” he said, accusing the U.S. of acting in concert with Israel.
French President Emmanuel Macron also weighed in from the Paris Air Show, announcing that European diplomats in Geneva would present a “comprehensive, diplomatic and technical offer of negotiation” to address Iran’s nuclear threat. “No one can seriously believe that this threat can be met with current operations alone,” he said, calling for expert-led talks to regain control over Iran’s programme.
