Government Announces Tax Break on School Supplies to Support Families

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has announced a tax break on school supplies, effective from 1st July to 30th September, 2025. The initiative eliminates Import Duty, Value Added Tax (VAT), and Customs Service Charge (CSC) on essential educational materials, easing the financial burden on families ahead of the new school year.

This annual back-to-school tax concession aims to make education more accessible and affordable for parents, guardians, and students across the Federation. The relief applies to a broad range of items including uniform fabrics, textbooks, calculators, stationery, and other classroom essentials. Both individual parents and commercial importers stand to benefit from the measure.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to educational advancement and household support. “Education is the foundation of our nation’s future, and we recognise the financial challenges many parents face. By removing these taxes on essential supplies, we are taking concrete steps to make education more accessible while providing meaningful relief to households across our Federation,” Dr. Drew stated.

The Customs and Excise Department has pledged its full support in implementing the initiative efficiently. Members of the public seeking clarification on eligible items or the application process are encouraged to contact the department at 1 (869) 466-7227 or visit www.skncustoms.com.

This measure, now a recurring government initiative during the back-to-school season, underscores the administration’s strategic approach to education policy and social protection. It is expected to stimulate local commerce while enabling families to better equip their children for academic success.
