Celebrated calypsonian Elston “Ellie Matt” Nero, a seminal figure in Caribbean music and a beacon of St. Kitts and Nevis’s cultural identity, has reportedly regained consciousness after falling into a coma while receiving treatment for chronic kidney disease at a nursing home in Florida.
The 10-time Calypso King and 7-time Road March winner has been suffering from kidney disease for over a decade.

Sources close to his family confirm Ellie Matt is now responsive and out of coma, though he remains under careful medical supervision.
Ellie Matt’s enduring legacy as self-taught virtuoso began at just eight years old. Over his storied career, he composed more than 100 original songs and fronted the influential Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass, a musical powerhouse for over twenty years. He was awarded the Medal of Honour in 2000, inducted into the International Soca Hall of Fame, and honoured by the Organization of American States in 2016 for his cultural contributions.
Best known for works such as “Viva St. Kitts – I Love St. Kitts,” Ellie Matt remains an iconic voice on the Federation’s airwaves. His recovery marks a pivotal moment, as supporters and music fans alike await further updates from his family and medical team.
