Montego Bay Set to Reap Benefits from Hosting 49th CARICOM Heads Meeting

Montego Bay is preparing to host the 49th CARICOM Heads of Government meeting, running from 6th to 8th July at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, and Mayor Richard Vernon predicts substantial regional collaboration and economic gains. Leaders from across the Caribbean, including St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, will convene to address pressing issues including security, climate change, trade, telecommunications and the ongoing crisis in Haiti.

Mayor Vernon told Jamaican media that hosting this summit reaffirms Montego Bay’s reputation as a premier location for major regional gatherings, recalling the city’s successful staging of the 2003 CARICOM meeting and the Rose Hall Declaration. “It positions us as a key meeting place for important regional policy discussions,” he noted.

Key agenda items this year include transportation, tourism digitalisation, climate financing, food and nutrition security, and telecommunication, alongside external trade negotiations and regional security strategies. Vernon also highlighted the opportunity to revive his proposal for a regional disaster response hub, anticipating that discussions on climate resilience and public safety may advance the idea.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness will assume the CARICOM Chairmanship on 1st July, with the meeting centred around the theme “People, Partnerships, Prosperity: Promoting a Secure and Sustainable Future”.

Vernon extended his congratulations to Holness and assured that Montego Bay is fully prepared to welcome delegates, emphasising the importance of a secure and enjoyable environment for attendees.
