Trump Signals End to Tariff Pause as July Deadline Nears

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that he does not intend to extend the 90-day pause on tariffs for most nations beyond the set expiration date of 9th July, 2025, signalling a potential ramp-up in trade penalties unless new agreements are reached with the United States.

Speaking in an interview aired on Fox News Channel’s Sunday Morning Futures, Trump revealed that letters would soon be sent to foreign governments notifying them of the impending tariffs. “We’ll look at how a country treats us — are they good, are they not so good — some countries we don’t care, we’ll just send a high number out,” he remarked. The letters, he said, will carry a blunt message: “Congratulations, we’re allowing you to shop in the United States of America, you’re going to pay a 25% tariff, or a 35% or a 50% or 10%.”

The tariff pause, introduced earlier this year, was intended to provide a 90-day window for the U.S. to negotiate individual trade agreements. However, with fewer than two weeks remaining before the deadline, there appears to be little movement toward comprehensive deals. “There’s 200 countries, you can’t talk to all of them,” Trump said, acknowledging the logistical challenge of striking bilateral agreements on such a scale.

The announcement comes amid rising global economic uncertainty and ongoing trade tensions. Analysts warn that a sudden return to high tariffs could strain relationships with key trading partners and potentially disrupt global supply chains.

Trump also used the interview to touch on several other key issues, including ongoing negotiations over a potential TikTok deal, U.S.-China relations, recent strikes on Iran, and his continued push for stricter immigration enforcement. His remarks signal a broader shift toward a more aggressive and unilateral trade stance as he eyes a return to the White House in 2025.

As the 9th July deadline approaches, affected countries will now have to decide whether to accelerate negotiations with the U.S. or brace for the economic impact of steep new trade barriers.
