PM Drew Reaffirms CARICOM Climate Advocacy and Announces 2027 Summit in St. Kitts and Nevis

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, reaffirmed the region’s commitment to climate justice and deepening global partnerships during a joint press conference with CARICOM Chairman and Jamaican Prime Minister, the Honourable Andrew Holness, following the 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM on 8th July in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Dr. Drew delivered a targeted intervention during the session, placing climate change at the forefront of CARICOM’s strategic priorities. He called on international partners to act with “greater equity and responsibility,” stressing that vulnerable Caribbean populations are already facing disproportionate impacts from rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation.

“CARICOM will continue to lead the global call for climate justice,” the Prime Minister stated. “Our people are on the frontlines of this crisis. We must remain united in holding the world accountable.”

The press conference highlighted several key outcomes from the three-day summit, reflecting the region’s unified stance on a range of issues, including regional security, food sustainability, trade, and economic resilience.

Prime Minister Drew also used the platform to emphasise the value of South-South cooperation, drawing attention to his recent high-level meetings with the Government of Nigeria and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). These engagements, he said, are emblematic of CARICOM’s ongoing efforts to strengthen economic and cultural ties with Africa, particularly in areas of trade, investment, and diaspora collaboration.

In a forward-looking moment, Dr. Drew formally announced that St. Kitts and Nevis will host the next CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting from 25th to 27th February, 2027, during his tenure as Chair of the Community. The 2027 summit will mark a significant occasion for the Federation, offering an opportunity to showcase national development progress and its leadership role within CARICOM.

As the region continues to navigate complex global challenges, including climate change, inflation, and geopolitical instability, CARICOM leaders remain focused on collective action and mutual support.
