Major Contraband Seizure at His Majesty’s Prison Following Multi-Agency Raid

A significant quantity of contraband was seized during a coordinated early morning operation at His Majesty’s Prison on St. Kitts on Tuesday, 9th July, 2025. The joint raid, carried out by multiple national security agencies, was confirmed by authorities as being one of the most extensive prison search efforts in recent years.

The comprehensive operation began at 4:30 a.m. and concluded at 12:30 p.m., encompassing a full search of the prison facility and its compound. It was executed by a combined force that included the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s Special Services Unit (SSU), Anti-Narcotics Unit, and Joint Security Operation Tactical Team (JSOTT); personnel from the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Infantry; Customs and Excise officers; and members of the St. Kitts and Nevis Prison Service.

The operation was conducted under the direction of Acting Commissioner of Prisons Spencer Isaac and senior law enforcement officials.

Authorities confirmed that the search yielded multiple prohibited items, including 15 mobile phones, a quantity of marijuana, improvised weapons (shanks), cigarettes, tobacco, lighters, containers of fermented liquors, and other banned materials. All items have since been confiscated.

The discovery highlights the ongoing and serious threat posed by contraband in correctional facilities. While some items, like mobile phones and alcohol, may seem non-threatening, they can enable inmates to coordinate illegal activities from behind bars, undermine institutional security, and jeopardise the safety of officers, inmates, and the general public.

Law enforcement leaders stressed that combating the smuggling of contraband into prisons remains a top priority. The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting public safety and maintaining order within the correctional system. A statement from the Force noted that such operations are critical in restoring discipline and preventing prisons from becoming centres of criminal coordination.

The public is encouraged to play an active role in safeguarding the integrity of the nation’s correctional institutions. Anyone with information related to the smuggling of contraband is urged to contact the nearest police station or report anonymously via the Crime Stoppers hotline at 707.
