Small Craft Advisory Issued for Caribbean Islands Amid Rough Seas Warning

A small craft advisory has been issued for multiple Caribbean islands, including St. Kitts and Nevis, as forecasters warn of dangerous sea conditions impacting mainly open waters on the northern and eastern coasts. The advisory, prompted by strong winds and high seas, is in effect at varying times across Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, the British Virgin Islands, and St. Kitts and Nevis from today through Thursday morning.

According to regional meteorological authorities, winds are expected to reach 26 to 41 kilometres per hour (14 to 22 knots) with gusts potentially peaking at 59 kilometres per hour (32 knots). Seas will range between 1.8 and 2.4 metres (6 to 8 feet), with swells reaching up to 3.4 metres (10 feet) and wave periods forecast between 6 to 9 seconds.

In Barbuda, the advisory takes effect from midday today until Thursday morning. Antigua and Anguilla will face rough seas from this afternoon through Thursday morning, while Montserrat’s warning spans this evening through Wednesday night. The British Virgin Islands will be under advisory from Wednesday dawn to Thursday morning, and St. Kitts and Nevis will be affected from Wednesday morning until Wednesday night.

Authorities are urging caution as the turbulent conditions may lead to boats capsizing, disruption to fishing and marine transport, and pose a threat to life and property. Small craft operators and inexperienced mariners are strongly advised to avoid venturing out to sea during the advisory period.

The most hazardous conditions are expected in open waters along the northern and eastern coastlines, where wave height and wind speeds are expected to be at their peak. These areas pose the greatest danger to small vessels, making navigation particularly risky.

Marine stakeholders across the affected islands are being closely monitored and updated, as the adverse conditions are linked to strong pressure gradients in the Atlantic that are expected to subside by late Thursday.
