Donald Trump Briefed on Epstein Files Linking His Name, Says US Attorney General

United States Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly informed President Donald Trump earlier this year that his name appeared in documents connected to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, according to multiple sources familiar with the exchange. The revelation came during a spring briefing at the White House, as part of a broader re-examination of the case by the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors.

The briefing, which also included Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, took place as part of routine legal updates provided to President Trump. According to Bondi and Blanche, the files contained references to the former president as well as other prominent individuals. However, they noted that “nothing in the files warranted further investigation or prosecution.”

The documents referenced during the meeting were drawn from previously undisclosed materials connected to Epstein, the disgraced financier who died in custody in 2019 while facing federal sex trafficking charges. Although Trump has long maintained he distanced himself from Epstein years prior to his arrest — citing a falling-out and the financier’s ejection from Mar-a-Lago — the fact that his name continues to surface in internal case files has reignited scrutiny.

Bondi’s update came as pressure mounted from some factions within Trump’s base, particularly those suspicious of the administration’s decision earlier this month to formally close the Epstein investigation. That announcement, delivered through a Justice Department memo, confirmed that Epstein died by suicide in 2019 and that no further charges would be brought. The memo also stated that no so-called “client list” of Epstein’s alleged associates would be released, citing privacy concerns for victims and witnesses.

Trump’s communications director Steven Cheung dismissed renewed speculation, calling it “fake news” and reiterating the claim that the president had distanced himself from Epstein after learning of inappropriate behaviour. “He ejected Epstein from Mar-a-Lago for being a creep,” Cheung said.

Trump’s long history with Epstein, however, remains a point of contention. The two were known to be friends in the 1990s and early 2000s. In a 2002 interview with New York magazine, Trump referred to Epstein as a “terrific guy” and remarked on his interest in young women — a comment that has resurfaced in the wake of Epstein’s criminal downfall.

A 2003 birthday book reportedly compiled by Epstein’s then-girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, also included a racy birthday card signed by Trump. While he has denied authoring or drawing the note, he is currently suing The Wall Street Journal and its reporters for defamation in relation to its reporting on the card.

One of Epstein’s accusers has urged investigators to look more deeply at individuals in Epstein’s network, including Mr. Trump, although no evidence has surfaced to implicate the former president in wrongdoing. Maxwell herself was convicted in 2021 on five counts, including child sex trafficking.

In the aftermath of her arrest in 2020, Trump drew criticism when he publicly stated, “I wish her well,” a remark many found unsettling given the severity of the charges against her.

The administration’s decision to end its review of Epstein’s files and not release further information has sparked backlash from within Trump’s support base. Many of his followers had expected full disclosure, especially after President Trump hinted during his 2024 campaign that he might release the files if re-elected. Instead, the Justice Department’s declaration has only fuelled suspicions of a cover-up.

While Bondi and Blanche maintain that the references to President Trump are neither new nor legally consequential, the continued secrecy around the full extent of Epstein’s connections to the world’s elite — and why those details remain shielded — ensures the controversy is far from over.
