The University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana is set to inaugurate a dedicated “Caribbean Corner” within its Sam Jonah Library, marking a significant step in academic and cultural collaboration with the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. This initiative follows the impending signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UCC and the Office of the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, aiming to foster deeper ties through shared history, scholarship, and exchange programmes.
The Caribbean Corner will serve as a resource hub, featuring curated materials that highlight the history, culture, diaspora connections, and global contributions of St. Kitts and Nevis. Special emphasis will be placed on the historical links between Ghana and the Caribbean, particularly those stemming from the transatlantic slave trade and the enduring bonds of kinship, resistance, and cultural resilience.
Dr. Anthony Cobblah, UCC’s University Librarian, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The Caribbean Corner is more than just a physical space; it is a symbol of historical reconnection and academic bridge-building between Africa and the Caribbean. We are proud to host such a space that inspires knowledge exchange and cultural appreciation.”
To oversee the project’s implementation, a dedicated committee has been established within the library. Members include Dr. Diana Atuase, Doris Nimakoh, Theophilus Ocran, Esther Guichard, Miriam Borketey, and Frederick Ekuban. The committee is also working towards forming a Caribbean Club to further promote the culture of St. Kitts and Nevis and strengthen the relationship between the two regions.
Dr. Justice K.G. Agyenim-Boateng, Head of the Institutional Affiliation Office at UCC and the contact person for the scholarship programme, highlighted that the partnership will encompass annual study opportunities for students from St. Kitts and Nevis, faculty and student exchange programmes, and collaborative research and capacity-building initiatives.
This collaboration is poised to enhance UCC’s international engagement and establish lasting academic ties with institutions across the Caribbean. It aligns with the University’s broader mission of advancing Pan-African education, global academic cooperation, and cultural diplomacy.
Once completed, the Caribbean Corner will be stocked with relevant books, historical archives, digital collections, and multimedia materials sourced from both UCC and institutions in St. Kitts and Nevis. This initiative will position UCC as a leading institution in Afro-Caribbean academic cooperation, offering students and researchers a unique platform for dialogue, discovery, and collaborative learning.
