The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has announced an additional Discounted VAT Rate Day on Saturday, 23rd August, 2025, to support residents and businesses affected by the adverse weather conditions caused by Hurricane Erin. The decision comes after heavy rainfall from the storm’s northern passage on 16th August led to businesses closing early and many residents remaining indoors.
The Discounted VAT Rate Day initiative temporarily reduces the standard 17% Value Added Tax (VAT) to 5% on eligible goods purchased and received on the designated day. Vehicles, however, remain ineligible for the concession. The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has reiterated that the reduced rate applies only to tangible items in stock and delivered on the day of purchase, excluding pre-orders or items not immediately available.

This announcement follows the Government’s earlier decision to announce Discounted VAT Rate Days on Friday, 15th and Saturday, 16th August, 2025. The measure was welcomed by families and businesses alike, providing an opportunity for significant savings ahead of the new academic year.
In addition to the VAT Discount Days, the Government has extended a 0% VAT rate on a wide range of essential school supplies from 1st July through 30th September, 2025. Items eligible under this initiative include exercise books, textbooks, school uniforms and uniform cloth, school bags, geometry sets, calculators, lunch boxes, rulers, writing instruments, art supplies, and protective covers. Excluded goods remain firearms, ammunition, tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, and vehicles.
Officials emphasised that these measures form part of broader tax relief efforts designed to ease the financial burden on households while supporting local businesses during the critical back-to-school period.
