The St. Kitts National Youth Parliament Association (SKNYPA) and the National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda are set to conclude their exchange programme on Tuesday, 19th August, 2025, with a joint mock parliamentary sitting at the National Assembly Chambers in Basseterre. The session, which will focus on environmental resilience and the Sustainable Island State Agenda, is expected to be the highlight of the four-day visit, showcasing the collaborative spirit of youth leaders across the Eastern Caribbean.

The debate tomorrow will allow young parliamentarians to propose solutions to pressing climate and sustainability challenges, drawing on shared experiences from their respective countries. It is also intended to serve as a practical forum for strengthening leadership, governance, and public advocacy skills. Particular focus will be given to climate change and sustainable development.
The mock sitting will be carried live on social media platforms, television and local radio stations. SKNYPA President Hasani Mc Donald stressed the value of public participation and encouraged citizens to tune in and follow the proceedings.
“You can tune in on ZIZ for Facebook and television, and you can witness the advocacy work that we are doing here as a joint effort,” McDonald said. “It starts at 9am and should be through by 12. So, you can listen at your jobs if you have a television, you can put it on your Facebook while you’re working, but we want you to hear what the young persons have to say regarding sustainability and St. Kitts and Nevis transforming to a sustainable island state agenda along with the Antigua and Barbudans who have a similar mantra.”
The Antigua and Barbuda delegation arrived in St. Kitts on 16th August, where they were welcomed with a cocktail reception hosted at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in Bird Rock. Their itinerary included worship at Antioch Baptist Church on 17th August, followed by courtesy calls on 18th August with Governor-General Dame Marcella Liburd, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Speaker of the National Assembly Lanein Blanchette, Environment Minister Dr. Joyelle Clarke, and Natasha Grey-Brookes, Political Leader of the People’s Action Movement.
The collaboration between the two national youth parliament associations has been ongoing since 2022, when the partnership gave rise to the Eastern Caribbean Youth Parliament Network. This regional initiative aims to foster continuous cooperation, leadership development, and greater youth involvement in governance across the Eastern Caribbean.
With the mock sitting and exchange drawing near, both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to equipping young people with the tools to lead on issues that directly impact their communities, particularly climate change and sustainable development.
