Eastern Caribbean Urged to Remain Vigilant as Two Tropical Systems Develop in Atlantic

The Eastern Caribbean was spared the brunt of Hurricane Erin, which passed north of the islands over the past weekend, however, residents of St. Kitts and Nevis and neighbouring territories are being urged to remain vigilant as two tropical systems are currently being monitored in the Atlantic.

A tropical wave located over the central tropical Atlantic continues to generate a broad area of disorganised showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are considered favourable for gradual development, and a tropical depression could form by the end of this week or over the weekend. This system is expected to move west to west-northwest at approximately 20 mph, approaching the vicinity of the Leeward Islands on Friday. Its chance of formation within the next 48 hours is currently assessed at 10 percent, rising to 60 percent over the next seven days.

Meanwhile, another tropical wave, located a few hundred miles southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern tropical Atlantic, is producing a more concentrated area of showers and thunderstorms. Conditions are generally supportive of further development over the coming days as it moves westward at around 15 mph. By the end of the week, the environment may become less favourable, limiting its potential growth. Formation chances for this system stand at 30 percent both over the next 48 hours and the next seven days.

Residents of St. Kitts and Nevis are advised to continue monitoring updates and advisories issued by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Authorities recommend reviewing and updating family hurricane plans, ensuring emergency supplies are ready, and staying alert for any changes in storm trajectories or intensities.

While Hurricane Erin caused heavy rainfall and some localized flooding during its passage north of the islands, damage was limited and no major impacts were reported. The event serves as a reminder that hurricane season is ongoing, and preparedness remains crucial.
