Project LEAD Internship Connects Youth to Governance in St. Kitts and Nevis

The Prime Minister’s Office has successfully concluded the inaugural Project LEAD internship in St. Kitts and Nevis, a six-week initiative aimed at giving high school and first-year college students practical experience in governance, leadership, and civic engagement.

Seven students were selected for the pilot programme and placed in ministries and departments aligned with their career interests, including Health, Social Development, National Security, Customs, the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service (SKNIS), and the Human Resources Department at the Prime Minister’s Office. Assignments ranged from hospital exposure for aspiring medical professionals to placements at the Citizen Security Secretariat for those pursuing careers in security.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew hailed the internship as an investment in the nation’s youth, underscoring its role in empowering future leaders. “Our young people are the leaders of today. Project LEAD gave them the exposure, confidence, and inspiration to see themselves as decision-makers and changemakers in our Federation. I want each of them to know that their voice matters, their dreams matter, and their country needs them,” he stated.

Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Naeemah Hazelle, explained that the programme was created to bridge the gap between young people and the inner workings of government. She noted that while many students see ministers visiting schools or read about policies in the news, few understand the demanding processes that sustain governance. “They were exposed to see the hard work behind the scenes that makes everything tick in our society,” she added.

The success of this first cycle has set the stage for future expansion. Applications for the next Project LEAD internship in St. Kitts and Nevis will open in May 2026, targeting fourth and fifth form students and first-year college students. Selection will be based on academic merit, motivation, effort, and leadership potential.
