The Public Works Department (PWD) has officially completed the construction phase of the George Street road rehabilitation project, marking a significant improvement to infrastructure in the Newtown area. The works, which began in May 2025, included the resurfacing of the roadway and the rehabilitation of the drainage system to improve driving conditions and reduce the risk of flooding.
With the road now fully open to motorists, only minor finishing touches remain before the project is completely wrapped up.
Raymond Browe, Supervisor at Public Works, Road Division, praised the resilience of the community during the construction process. “I know it was a tedious process, I know some people felt it was long, but we are finally here… We want to thank the neighbours and the residents of George Street for their patience, for their understanding, for their love, for everything that they did for us, because sometimes they gave us water when we needed it. So we just want to say thanks to everyone that contributed in the efforts of us getting this road done.”
Public Works Minister, Konris Maynard, also extended his appreciation to the residents and businesses in Newtown for their patience and cooperation throughout the roadworks. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure across the Federation to improve safety and mobility for citizens and visitors alike.
The George Street project is part of wider efforts by the Public Works Department to modernise road networks and drainage systems, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience against flooding.
