Former US Vice-President Kamala Harris has branded Joe Biden’s decision to run for a second term as “recklessness” in her forthcoming memoir, 107 Days. The sharp critique marks Harris’s most pointed public assessment yet of her former boss, underscoring long-standing tensions within the Democratic Party.
In an excerpt published by The Atlantic on Wednesday, Harris reflected on the atmosphere within the White House as Biden prepared for his 2024 campaign, noting that while staffers framed his candidacy as a personal choice, she viewed it as a misjudgement with grave national implications. The focus key phrase Kamala Harris memoir criticism of Joe Biden appears at the centre of her claims, as Harris argued that the stakes of the election “were simply too high” to be left to personal ambition.
Harris, who later lost the 2024 election to Donald Trump after Biden withdrew from the race, wrote that Biden’s age and declining stamina became increasingly evident, particularly during a poor debate performance that effectively ended his campaign. “At 81, Joe got tired. That’s when his age showed in physical and verbal stumbles,” she wrote, while insisting there was no conspiracy to conceal his frailty.
The memoir also highlights Harris’s frustrations at being sidelined within the administration. She cited examples of her work being downplayed, including securing billions in private investment for Latin American nations to ease migration pressures, only to face mischaracterisation from Republicans as the so-called “border czar.” Harris claimed the White House communications team failed to defend her record adequately, leaving her vulnerable to attacks.
She further recalled moments of personal discontent, such as watching a Biden address during a 2024 hurricane response in Texas, where she was only mentioned near the end of the speech. “It was almost nine minutes into the 11-minute address before he mentioned me,” she observed.
Despite the criticisms, Harris acknowledged Biden’s intelligence, experience, and commitment to public service, but stressed that the decision to pursue re-election “should have been more than a personal decision.”
The memoir’s title references the duration of Harris’s own failed presidential bid, and the full book is set for release on 23rd September.
