The fisheries sector in St. Kitts and Nevis is seeing steady growth, driven by the deployment of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), according to Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Samal Duggins. Speaking at a FADs Construction Workshop in Dieppe Bay on Saturday, 6th September, Minister Duggins reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing the industry and supporting fisherfolk.
The use of Fish Aggregating Devices has become a cornerstone of national fisheries policy. While surface FADs were traditionally used, they were often damaged or lost due to maritime traffic. To address this, the government shifted to subsurface FADs, which are more durable and cost-effective. Minister Duggins noted that 12 of the 15 targeted FADs have already been deployed, with a goal of reaching 20 by year’s end.
Highlighting the need for cooperation, the minister urged fisherfolk from communities such as Sandy Point, Godwin Ghaut and Dieppe Bay to collaborate more closely by sharing coordinates and fishing grounds. “When we work together, every fisherman will be able to catch more and earn more,” he said. “My role is to set policy and support frameworks that make it easier for you out on the waters.”
The sector’s growth is reflected in rising revenues, moving from approximately EC$8 million in recent years to EC$15 million in 2023, and further to EC$19 million in 2024. This trajectory, Minister Duggins stated, is proof of the resilience and hard work of fisherfolk across the Federation.
Kevin Bennett, representing the National Fisherfolk Organisation and the Capisterre Fishermen Marketing and Supplies Cooperative Society Limited, praised the collaborative spirit of the workshop. He described the event as “a very engaging and lively workshop” that created opportunities for open dialogue on past challenges and future possibilities. Bennett also thanked the Department of Marine Resources and its Director, Randel Thompson, for their leadership in advancing the initiative.
