The Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) intends to stage a protest and rally in Charlestown on Friday, 12th September, 2025, in opposition to the government’s Special Sustainability Zone initiative. The move, the party argues, will primarily benefit foreign investors while raising concerns about land sales, public consultation, and long-term economic and environmental impacts.

The NRP hopes that the protest, set to begin at 3pm at the D. R. Walwyn Plaza, will draw supporters and concerned citizens. NRP leaders are expected to criticise the recently passed Special Sustainability Zone Act and to highlight what they describe as the government’s failure to adequately engage the public on the matter. Party organisers have branded the protest a call to action to “protect what’s ours” and emphasised that it will be peaceful but firm in its message of resistance.
Government officials, however, maintain that the Special Sustainability Zone will deliver jobs, attract investment, and stimulate growth. In a recent media appearance, Special Advisor to Nevis’ Premier on Investment Matters, MP Alexis Jeffers, defended the initiative while accusing the NRP of consistently opposing progress.
Jeffers cited several recent projects, including the Ritz-Carlton development, Oualie Water Taxi pier, Newcastle police station, Malcolm Guishard Recreational Park, and a pension scheme for non-established workers, as examples of government-led improvements. He described the new police station as “one of the best in the Caribbean” and argued that infrastructure such as the Mondo Track has already produced tangible benefits for the people of Nevis.
“They oppose everything we do,” Jeffers said. “But we will continue to build this island as we have been mandated to do. The obstacles will come, but we will overcome them.”
The protest is expected to intensify debate over the future of Nevis’ development model, with both sides framing the issue as pivotal for the island’s economic and social wellbeing.
