Prime Minister Drew Pays Moving Tribute to Sir Edmund Lawrence

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has paid tribute to Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence, describing the former Governor-General as a man of humble beginnings whose lifetime of service significantly advanced the social and economic development of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Speaking on the 12th September, 2025 edition of The Roundtable, on Sir Edmund’s passing, Dr. Drew emphasised that even in his later years, he was determined to play a role in shaping the nation’s future. “In the last few months, it became necessary to digitise our archives. Even at that stage in his life, Sir Edmund was still determined to contribute to national development. That speaks volumes about his character and his enduring commitment to our country,” the Prime Minister said.

Dr. Drew also expressed gratitude to Sir Edmund’s family for supporting his decades of service. “I want to thank his wife, who has been his lifelong anchor, for sharing him with us. I want to thank his family for sharing him with us. For what he has done has really taken things from one level to the next,” he said.

In reflecting on the nation’s mourning, Dr. Drew continued: “So, we are flying all the flags at half-mast and really continue to celebrate the life of a man who came from humble beginnings, who rose to the top, but did not rise low. He rose with blessing. We want to thank God for his life and for his tremendous contribution to the development of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Sir Edmund Wickham Lawrence, who served as Governor-General from 2013 to 2015, is remembered as an accomplished economist, statesman, and leader. His career included decades of work in banking, finance, and national policymaking, which helped to establish a stronger economic foundation for St. Kitts and Nevis.

Born into modest circumstances, Sir Edmund rose to the highest office in the land with dignity, leaving a legacy of resilience, leadership, and service. His vision and dedication not only influenced the economic trajectory of the Federation but also inspired future generations.
