Tropical Depression Seven Forms in Atlantic, Forecast to Become Tropical Storm Gabrielle

Tropical Depression Seven has formed in the central tropical Atlantic, with forecasters warning it could strengthen into Tropical Storm Gabrielle before the end of Wednesday. The development marks the end of a lull in activity as the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season enters its peak months.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Depression Seven is producing maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, with higher gusts recorded. Gradual strengthening is expected, and the system may develop into a Category 1 hurricane by Sunday morning if current forecasts hold.

As of the latest advisory, the depression was located less than 1,200 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, moving west at 13 mph. Its projected path suggests a west-northwest to northwest motion across the tropical and subtropical central Atlantic over the coming days.

The NHC explained that tropical depressions are numbered systems with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less. Once winds reach 39 mph, they are classified as tropical storms and given a name—in this case, Gabrielle.

Meanwhile, a separate tropical wave has emerged a few hundred miles east-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands, generating disorganised showers and thunderstorms. Meteorologists said that although environmental conditions are only marginally favourable, any development would likely be slow. Heavy rainfall is expected to impact the Cabo Verde Islands through Wednesday and Thursday, but the system currently has only a low chance of becoming a stronger storm within the next week.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1st June through 30th November, with September traditionally being its most active month.
