St. Kitts and Nevis is on alert this week as tropical disturbances north-east of the Caribbean threaten to unleash heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and rough seas across the Federation and neighbouring islands.
Meteorologists warn that, even without developing into named storms, the disturbances could still bring between 100–150 millimetres (4–6 inches) of rain to parts of the Leeward Islands, with the heaviest downpours expected between Tuesday night and Wednesday. Localised thunderstorms and gusty winds are also possible, raising concerns of flooding in low-lying communities and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Authorities in St. Kitts and Nevis are urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly in flood-prone districts such as Basseterre, Cayon, and Charlestown, where heavy rains have historically caused significant disruption. Farmers are also being cautioned to prepare for possible crop damage and waterlogging, while motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded roadways.
The risk will not end midweek. A second disturbance trailing the first is expected to reinforce unsettled conditions into the weekend, prolonging the threat of saturated soils, overflowing ghauts, and dangerous seas around the islands. Rough conditions offshore may disrupt small craft activity and inter-island travel.
While Tropical Storm Gabrielle has moved away from the region, attention remains firmly fixed on these new systems. With the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season still active, the Federation is being reminded that preparedness and caution remain key to safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
