St. Kitts and Nevis Reaffirms Support for Taiwan’s UN Inclusion

In his address to the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew renewed St. Kitts and Nevis’s firm support for Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN, arguing that its exclusion undermines the very principles of universality and global justice.

Dr. Drew emphasised that Taiwan’s contributions to health, technology, and sustainable development make its exclusion from the UN and other agencies fundamentally unjust. He pressed the international community to rectify this by allowing Taiwan “meaningful participation” in global mechanisms.

“Taiwan’s innovation and technological leadership are essential for the global community to tackle future challenges,” he asserted. “The Assembly’s theme, ‘leaving no one behind,’ demands we include Taiwan in the UN’s work, especially within agencies like WHO and ICAO.”

St. Kitts and Nevis has demonstrated actions matching its rhetoric. In April 2025, the National Assembly passed a resolution endorsing Taiwan’s participation in key international bodies such as the United Nations, WHO, ICAO, UNFCCC, and INTERPOL. This legislative support underscores the Federation’s diplomatic alignment and consistency regarding Taiwan’s international role.

On the technology front, cooperation between the two territories has translated into tangible projects. The Digital Identity Authentication Project, a collaboration supported by Taiwan’s ICDF, aims to issue national e-ID cards by 2026, enhancing public service accessibility across the Federation. Taiwan is also helping St. Kitts and Nevis develop a Hospital Information System and has launched a citizen medical information card to support efficient, digitised health services.

Taiwan’s embassy in Basseterre has highlighted further joint initiatives in poultry farming, smart healthcare, and green energy as part of their bilateral portfolio. These links reflect a relationship built on both principle and practicality.

Viewed against rising geopolitical tensions around Taiwan’s status, Dr. Drew’s demand carries resonance: small states like St. Kitts and Nevis are not only voicing moral positions—they are actively embedding Taiwan into their national development strategies.

This alignment signals a continuing strategy: to use diplomatic influence plus development cooperation as tools to reshape global norms on inclusion, sovereignty, and participation.
